Tree work in South Brisbane
The southside covers a lot of ground and a lot of tree types. The bayside strip from Wynnum and Manly to Lota has Norfolk pines, paperbarks and salt-blasted gums on sandy soil. The 1960s and 70s suburbs of Mount Gravatt, Holland Park, Mansfield and Wishart have mature eucalypts and camphor laurels that now tower over post-war houses. Carindale, Belmont and Chandler back onto bushland and got hit hard in the November 2025 hailstorms, when 14cm stones fell at Chandler. Further west, Sunnybank, Eight Mile Plains and Calamvale have dense newer housing where trees were planted too close to everything.
Because most of the southside is Brisbane City Council, the permit question comes up constantly. The good news is that the council's own exemptions cover the majority of backyard removals: trees within 3 metres of the house, trees under 30cm across the trunk, dead trees and storm-damaged ones. The mapped areas around Toohey Forest, Whites Hill, the Bulimba Creek corridor and the Brisbane Koala Bushlands at Burbank are where a permit is more likely, and we check before we quote.

Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003 protects vegetation in mapped bushland, waterway corridors, significant native and urban vegetation and under Vegetation Protection Orders, including on private land. Council's fact sheet sets out the exemptions that cover most suburban jobs: a tree whose whole trunk is within 3 metres of a lawfully built, occupied dwelling (6 metres on lots over 4,000m²), garden trees under 30cm trunk diameter at 1.4 metres, fence-line trees under 20cm, pruning of up to 20 per cent of live foliage in 12 months, dead trees, and trees showing an immediate hazard. Permit applications are free. None of the exemptions apply to significant landscape trees, and we check the mapping for your address as part of the quote.
