Tree services in Wakerley: what we see and what we do
Wakerley was built in the 1990s and 2000s on old farmland and bush, and the estates off Rickertt Road and Manly Road sit on bigger blocks than the older bayside suburbs. Developers left stands of ironbark and blue gum in the reserves and along some boundaries, and the new gardens went in with tuckeroos, lilly pilly hedges and golden canes. Twenty-five years later the hedges are trees, the palms are over the gutters and the retained gums are mature.
Being 15 minutes from our yard, Wakerley gets regular visits for hedge reshapes, golden cane and palm removals, and reducing ironbarks over roofs and pools. Trees may be protected under Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003, and estate covenants sometimes add their own rules, though a trunk within 3 metres of the house or under 30 centimetres diameter is generally exempt from council, and we check the mapping when we quote (council fact sheet).
Things to watch on Wakerley properties
- Lilly pilly hedges that have gone from 2 metres to 6
- Retained ironbarks and blue gums now over pools and outdoor areas
- Golden cane clumps pushing on fences and side paths

Brisbane City Council rules for Wakerley trees
Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003 protects vegetation in mapped bushland, waterway corridors, significant native and urban vegetation and under Vegetation Protection Orders, including on private land. Council's fact sheet sets out the exemptions that cover most suburban jobs: a tree whose whole trunk is within 3 metres of a lawfully built, occupied dwelling (6 metres on lots over 4,000m²), garden trees under 30cm trunk diameter at 1.4 metres, fence-line trees under 20cm, pruning of up to 20 per cent of live foliage in 12 months, dead trees, and trees showing an immediate hazard. Permit applications are free. None of the exemptions apply to significant landscape trees, and we check the mapping for your address as part of the quote.
