Tree services in Chapel Hill: what we see and what we do
Chapel Hill is steep, bushy and built through the 1970s and 80s on bigger blocks that climb from Moggill Road up to the Mount Coot-tha reserves. Spotted gums, ironbarks and blue gums were left when the houses went in, hoop pines and silky oaks were planted around them, and cocos palms arrived later beside the pools. Many blocks have gums standing above the house on the slope, which means anything that falls comes downhill towards the roof.
Chapel Hill is about 50 minutes from Sheldon and we plan a full day there. Gum dismantles above houses, deadwooding and thinning for storm season and bushfire clearance on the reserve edge are the common jobs. Trees may be protected under Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003, with the reserve and Chapel Hill bushland mapped, though a trunk within 3 metres of the house or under 30 centimetres diameter is generally exempt, and we check the mapping before quoting (council fact sheet).
Things to watch on Chapel Hill properties
- Gums uphill of the house on steep blocks
- Bushfire fuel on the Mount Coot-tha reserve edge before summer
- Sudden branch drop from ironbarks and spotted gums in the heat

Brisbane City Council rules for Chapel Hill trees
The western suburbs are Brisbane City Council, so the Natural Assets Local Law 2003 applies. Council's fact sheet exempts trees within 3 metres of an occupied dwelling (6 metres on lots over 4,000m², which covers much of Brookfield, Pullenvale and Moggill), trees under 30cm trunk diameter, dead trees, hazardous trees and pruning of up to 20 per cent of foliage a year. The west also has more mapped bushland and waterway corridors than most of the city, along Moggill Creek, around Mount Coot-tha and through the Pullenvale valleys, so the mapping check matters more here.
