Tree services in Manly: what we see and what we do
Manly climbs from the boat harbour up a steep hill, and the older homes on the ridge above Cambridge Parade have wide views and the trees to match: Norfolk pines, Moreton Bay figs, poincianas and frangipanis that were planted when the houses went up. Blocks range from tight village lots near the water to bigger hillside blocks towards Manly West. The bay wind comes straight up the slope, and trees on the eastern side cop the full force of any storm.
Working on Manly's hill means steep access, so most jobs are climbed and lowered in sections rather than felled. We do a lot of fig reductions, palm removals and storm cleanup here. Trees may be protected under Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003, though a tree with the trunk within 3 metres of the house or under 30 centimetres diameter is generally exempt, and we confirm that when we quote (council fact sheet).
Things to watch on Manly properties
- Moreton Bay fig roots lifting driveways and retaining walls on the hill
- Norfolk pine limbs over steep driveways after bay storms
- Cocos palms leaning towards the water on wind-exposed blocks

Brisbane City Council rules for Manly trees
Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003 protects vegetation in mapped bushland, waterway corridors, significant native and urban vegetation and under Vegetation Protection Orders, including on private land. Council's fact sheet sets out the exemptions that cover most suburban jobs: a tree whose whole trunk is within 3 metres of a lawfully built, occupied dwelling (6 metres on lots over 4,000m²), garden trees under 30cm trunk diameter at 1.4 metres, fence-line trees under 20cm, pruning of up to 20 per cent of live foliage in 12 months, dead trees, and trees showing an immediate hazard. Permit applications are free. None of the exemptions apply to significant landscape trees, and we check the mapping for your address as part of the quote.
