Stump Grinding & Stump Removal Brisbane

A stump is a trip hazard, a termite hotel and a dead spot in the lawn. We grind it out below ground level in under an hour for most stumps, and the mulch fills the hole.

What we do

Stump Grinding & Removal in Brisbane, the Redlands and Logan

Stump grinding is the fast, clean way to get rid of a stump. The grinder's cutting wheel chews the stump into chips down to around 200 to 300mm below ground level, taking the main roots with it. The hole is backfilled with the grindings and a bit of soil, and you can turf or plant over it within a few weeks. There is no excavator, no hole the size of a car, and no trailer load of clay to get rid of.

Our grinder fits through a standard side gate, which matters in Brisbane where the stump is nearly always in the backyard. We grind stumps we have removed and stumps left by other contractors or by storms, from a palm stump to an old camphor laurel a metre and a half across. Where a stump has to be dug out completely, for a pool, a slab or a driveway, we can arrange full removal.

Stumps are worth dealing with sooner rather than later in south-east Queensland. Termites use old stumps as a food source and a nest, and a stump with a termite colony in it is a short walk from your bearers and joists. Gum stumps in particular reshoot for years if they are left.

Digging out the whole root plate for building or pool works, arranged as a separate job.

Why get a stump ground

  • It is a trip hazard for kids, guests and the mower
  • Termites: stumps are a food source and a nest site near the house
  • Gum and camphor laurel stumps reshoot into a thicket if left
  • You want a clean lawn, a new bed, turf or paving where the tree was
  • Selling the house and the stump looks like an unfinished job
  • A palm stump is rotting and attracting cockroaches and rats

FAQ

Stump Grinding & Removal in Brisbane: common questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

Standard is 200 to 300mm below ground level, which is enough to lay turf or plant a garden over it. If you are paving, building or putting in a pool we grind deeper or arrange full removal so nothing rots under the slab.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

Yes, but not in exactly the same hole straight away. The grindings will take a year or two to break down and rob nitrogen from the soil as they do. Remove most of the chip, backfill with soil, and plant a metre or so to the side if you can.

Will the tree grow back after stump grinding?

Not from a stump ground below ground level. Gums, camphor laurels and umbrella trees can throw suckers from roots left in the ground for a season; these are easy to pull or mow and die off once the root reserves are used up.

Can you grind a stump next to a fence or a wall?

Usually, to within a few centimetres. The last sliver against a concrete footing or a colorbond post is cut and chiselled by hand. Tell us about underground services, irrigation and cables near the stump before we start.

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chips the stump and the top of the roots into mulch below ground level and is quick and tidy. Removal digs out the whole root plate, usually with a machine, and leaves a large hole. Removal is only needed for construction; for lawns and gardens, grinding is the better option.
