Palm Tree Removal Brisbane

Cocos palms dropping fruit on the driveway, golden canes eating the side of the house, a date palm the previous owner planted too close. We climb them, drop them in sections and grind the stump.

What we do

Palm Tree Removal in Brisbane, the Redlands and Logan

Palms are half of what we remove in the bayside suburbs. The cocos (queen) palm is the usual offender: it needs cleaning every eight to ten months, drops slippery orange fruit that stains concrete, and attracts bats and rats. Golden canes multiply into a clump that pushes on fences and pipes. Alexandra and Bangalow palms grow tall and thin and drop heavy fronds and seed on cars. None of them are native to Brisbane and none are protected in the councils we work in, so the usual answer when a client is sick of one is simply to take it out.

Removal is done by climbing or from a ladder for smaller palms, taking the head off first and then the trunk in sections. Palm trunk is fibrous and heavy and does not chip well, so it is cut into rounds and loaded on the truck. The stump is ground below ground level the same day if you want the spot for lawn or a garden bed. We also do palm cleaning: fronds, seed pods and hanging dead material removed so the palm looks tidy and stops dropping things.

We remove palms every week across the Redlands and bayside, Logan and out to Coomera and Pimpama, where the new estates were planted with cocos palms that are now 10 metres tall.

The most common job. Head off, trunk sectioned, stump ground. Fruit and seed cleaned up.

FAQ

Palm Tree Removal in Brisbane: common questions

Do I need a permit to remove a palm tree in Brisbane?

Almost never. Cocos, golden cane, Alexandra and date palms are not native and are not protected under Brisbane's Natural Assets Local Law, Redland's Local Law No. 6 or Logan's overlays in a normal suburban yard. The exception is a palm that sits in a mapped environmental area or a development condition, which we check for you.

Why do cocos palms need to be cleaned so often?

A cocos palm produces a new flower and fruit stalk several times a year. The fruit ripens, drops, ferments and stains, and the old fronds hang until they fall. Cleaning every 8 to 10 months keeps it tidy, which is why many owners eventually decide removal is cheaper than the cleaning bill.

Can you remove a palm near the pool without a mess?

Yes. We take the head off in a controlled way and lower trunk sections on ropes if there is a target underneath. Fronds are caught or dropped on tarps, and the pool gets a scoop before we leave.

Will the palm grow back from the stump?

A single-trunk palm like a cocos or Alexandra cannot regrow once the growing point at the top is cut; the stump just rots slowly and attracts termites, which is why we grind it. Clumping palms like golden canes will reshoot unless the root mass is ground or dug out.

Do you take away the trunk?

Yes. Palm trunk does not chip well, so it is cut into rounds and taken away on the truck. The fronds are chipped or removed. Nothing is left on the verge.
