Tree services in Paddington: what we see and what we do
Paddington is inner-city, hilly and tightly packed, with workers cottages and Queenslanders on small blocks stacked up the ridges off Given Terrace and Latrobe Terrace. Yards are often 300 to 500 square metres with no side access, and the trees are old: jacarandas and poincianas planted a century ago, mangoes and frangipanis in the back corners, and Chinese elms and camphor laurels that seeded in the gullies towards Ithaca Creek and grew unchecked. Nearly everything overhangs a neighbour.
Paddington is about 40 minutes from Sheldon and it is all rope work: trees are climbed, dismantled in small sections and carried through the house or over the fence to the chipper. Trees may be protected under Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003, and Paddington has its share of significant trees, though a trunk within 3 metres of the house or under 30 centimetres diameter is generally exempt, and we check the mapping when we quote (council fact sheet). Pruning is to AS 4373-2007.

Brisbane City Council rules for Paddington trees
The western suburbs are Brisbane City Council, so the Natural Assets Local Law 2003 applies. Council's fact sheet exempts trees within 3 metres of an occupied dwelling (6 metres on lots over 4,000m², which covers much of Brookfield, Pullenvale and Moggill), trees under 30cm trunk diameter, dead trees, hazardous trees and pruning of up to 20 per cent of foliage a year. The west also has more mapped bushland and waterway corridors than most of the city, along Moggill Creek, around Mount Coot-tha and through the Pullenvale valleys, so the mapping check matters more here.
