What we do

Hedge Trimming in Brisbane, the Redlands and Logan

Hedging is precise work and it shows when it is done badly. We trim with the right tool for the plant: long-reach hedge trimmers for lilly pilly and murraya, saws for a viburnum that has become a row of small trees, and hand pruning where a hedge is being restored. The line is set with string, the top is cut flat or crowned to shed rain, and the sides are tapered slightly so the base stays full and green.

The most common call is a hedge that was left for a couple of seasons and is now a metre taller than the fence, thin at the bottom and full of dead wood inside. Most hedges used in south-east Queensland will take a hard reduction and come back thick: lilly pilly, murraya, viburnum, photinia and orange jasmine all respond well. Conifers and some natives do not reshoot from bare wood, and we will tell you if that is the case before cutting.

We take on hedges across Brisbane's south and east, the Redlands and Logan, from a single front hedge to hundreds of metres of screening on acreage. Clippings are chipped or bagged and removed.

FAQ

Hedge Trimming in Brisbane: common questions

How often should a hedge be trimmed in Brisbane?

Fast growers like murraya and lilly pilly need two to three trims a year in our climate, usually after the spring flush and again in late summer and autumn. Slower hedges get by on one or two. Regular light trims keep a hedge dense; letting it go and then cutting hard is what leaves it bare at the bottom.

Can an overgrown hedge be brought back to fence height?

Most of the common hedging plants can, though it is best done in two stages six months apart so the plant keeps enough leaf to recover. We reduce the height first and the faces once new growth has come. Conifers cannot be cut back past green growth.

Can you trim the hedge on the boundary with my neighbour?

Yes, up to the boundary from your side. If the hedge belongs to the neighbour, Queensland's neighbourhood dispute rules let you cut back what overhangs your side. A quick word over the fence first saves trouble, and a shared hedge is often cheapest trimmed as one job.

Do you take the clippings?

Always. They are chipped or bagged and removed on the truck. Hedge clippings do not compost well in a green bin because of the volume, which is why we include removal in every hedging quote.
